Satya - Truthfulness

Emily McGinnis | JUN 14

satya

Satya — truthfulness — is one of the most subtle and powerful of the Yamas. At its surface, it asks us not to lie. But its deeper invitation is toward authenticity: the practice of living in alignment with who we actually are, not who we think we should be.

Patanjali pairs Satya always with Ahimsa: truth without compassion is just criticism. That pairing matters. Authenticity isn't about blurting every thought or feeling — it's about the quiet, steady work of closing the gap between your inner knowing and the way you show up in the world. This week, notice the small places where you perform rather than inhabit. The version of yourself you put forward in a difficult conversation. The opinion you soften so someone else stays comfortable. The "I'm fine" that isn't quite true. On the mat, Satya might look like admitting when you need a modification instead of pushing through to prove something. Off the mat, it might mean saying what's actually true — to someone else, or simply to yourself — rather than what's easy.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where are you performing a version of yourself rather than inhabiting one? What would it feel like to close that gap, even just a little, this week?

Authenticity isn't a destination. It's a daily practice of returning — gently, honestly — to yourself.
